Monthly ornithological summary for: August 2009

Firecrest - Springfield Park, 25th;

Spotted Flycatchers - Stoke Newington Reservoirs, 4th, 9th & 27th; Springfield Park, 25th; Abney Park Cemetery, 26th & 27th;

Common Buzzards - Clissold Park, 9th; SNR, 13th;

Hobbys - Clissold Park, at least one, 13th; at least two (probably three, possibly four) 17th; Abney Park Cemetery, 17th, 24th; SNR, 19th, 20th.

A surprisingly quiet month in the borough, despite intensive efforts at various sites.

Lots of coverage, and expectation, in truth failed to pay off this August, with common migrants in average numbers, and few highlights to write home about. The somewhat predictable - but no less impressive - roll call of Hobby records continued throughout, and Spotted Flycatchers provided migrant interest at several sites.

The first passerine to raise the heart rate took until the last week to register - a particularly showy Firecrest in Springfield Park on the 25th. But September was just around the corner.....
